The City of Fairmont Wastewater
Treatment Plant began operation in 1983 with a design flow of 6MGD. In 1993 the
NPDES Permit adapted to allow 9MGD. The WWTP secondary treatment facility
consists of 19 lift stations, bar screens, three rectangular primary clarifiers,
24 mechanically driven rotating biological contactors with supplemental
aeration, four secondary clarifiers, a chlorine disinfection system, and a
de-chlorination facility. The solids are concentrated into two gravity thickeners
before transferring to a two-stage anaerobic digestion system that produces
Class B biosolids. Biosolids are de-watered with 1.5-meter belt filter presses
and applied to local farmland in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
In addition, the City of Fairmont WWTP hosts six other towns or public service
districts including the Town of Barrackville, Greater Paw-Paw PSD, Kingmill
Valley PSD, Whitehall PSD, the Town of Monongah, and Dakota/Meredith Springs
area.
The City of Fairmont
WWTP is managed by Superintendent Fred Roman and a fine working staff
that includes: six Class IV operators, three Class I operators a
recently hired Operator in Training (OIT). Furthermore, five staff members are
certified Wastewater Laboratory Technicians. Operator training, education and
certification are encouraged with incentive pay to operators upon certification
achieved. Furthermore, the utility assumes the cost of training and offers
reimbursement up to one half of college and job related academic training.
Fairmont WWTP hosts seminars, workshops, and serves as a satellite training
facility to the WV Environmental Training Center to provide operators in the
north central region of West Virginia easy access to training opportunities. Citizen and
student group tours are frequently conducted through the Fairmont facility.
The Fairmont Wastewater
Treatment Plant continues to ensure that the biological purification process
enhances the statewide clean water goals. The facility excels with numerous
awards and continued commitment to protect the environment.
